I got the idea for the trafficking legislation story from the Facebook news feed of Traffick911, a local anti-human trafficking group I hope to volunteer with. They shared that the bill had been proposed to legislature. However, they didn’t post a call to action on it, so I thought I could dig a little more into the story and see how we as UNT students could impact the bill.
It had been a few years since I took my United States government class at college, so I did a little online research to brush up on how a bill is passed and how citizens can influence it once it is proposed to the legislature. Then I reached out to Dr. Eshbaugh-Soha to get his opinion on the best way for UNT students to affect the PROTECT bill. My other two sources were contacts I had made outside of school. All three of them gave me an opinion, fact, or perspective that I did not have at the beginning of the story, I am appreciative of that.
I would say the hardest thing about this story was fitting all the pertinent information and quotes into the 350-word limit. I still do not feel like I conveyed all the information I should have.
